Footage emerging from Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in the wake of the massive flash flood is some of the most apocalyptic I have ever seen. The scale of the devastation is hard to fathom, with hundreds feared dead.

I win again! Newly-released Swedish data shows that the rise in autism between 2001 and 2020 was... ENTIRELY attributable to an increase in cases WITHOUT intellectual disability—less severe cases than used to be the norm! The autism epidemic is not real: we just diagnose more.

This article refers to destroying ALPRs as "not necessarily morally wrong" and goes on to call the "attention" generated by vandals "effective" at getting government officials to change. Great stuff, glad to see the anti-ALPR people tacitly endorsing criminal activity.

Tempe had *33* cameras, which can see about 75 feet around them. Tempe is 40 square *miles* in area. The city was doing just 25 searches a day, and getting nearly 100 hotlist hits. Seems like a well-targeted system getting results. Oh well, congrats to Tempe car thieves!

Here's state-aggregated transfers as % of CDBG grants. Every single Senator or Congress member from Massachusetts, Montana, and Wyoming (except Moulton) voted for a bill that yanked >5% of their state's CDBG grants and sent them to neighboring states.

Teens will automatically get two hour time limits, a chronological feed (!) and will be barred from using the app overnight. A lot of these features are things people of all ages, who are Bricking their phones or deleting then redownloading IG, clearly want as well. New paper in Nature Human Behaviour makes two important points: First, LLMs reduce the linguistic diversity of how people express themselves. This is perhaps not super surprising at this stage. But the authors also show something deeper. Since the words we use carry information about who we are, LLMs are also erasing the identity signals that we embed in our writing. BREAKING: Russian officials have briefed Iran that the CIA Director Ratcliffe's Moscow visit delivered a message with the US asking Moscow to press Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, warning that Russian entities would otherwise face designations under Operation Economic Outcast. Russia declined, and told Iran the threatened measures were of limited consequence, according to two senior Iranian sources with knowledge of the briefing. The message also warned that Russian banks, traders and shipping entities tied to Iranian oil, gold and aviation will be sanctioned under the operation unless Moscow moves to close those channels.
